THE LEAST AMONGT YOU

This is a small movie we filmed in Whittier, Ca. on the grounds of a now closed juvenile facility. It was perfect for our story as it took place at a seminary college, and even the chapel was charming- but hey, where are my movies with locations like Paris? Greece? Some tropical island???

Anyway, it is based on the true story of the first African-American student at a California Seminary in the 1960’s, how he got there, and how he found himself. I played the only female professor at the seminary college. I’m a bit of a rebel (I wear pants and smoke and drink), and am immersed in my own tragedy, so we sort of find each other. It’s a timely story and thought-provoking.

This was a small movie with a first time director. He had also written the script, so he had a great deal of passion for the project. He was fine, and a nice man, but I really realized how long I’ve been doing this (25 years!), and it gets harder and harder not to speak up when I witness novice mistakes. Nothing major, just bad scheduling decisions, or overly ambitious shot lists given the time constraints. Lou Gosset Jr. is in the movie - what a thrill, and William Devane - he’s a pro, and we would commiserate together if we noticed a bad decision. When did I become the old lady on the set?! Cedric Sanders, a relative unknown, had the lead role. He did a good job. What I enjoyed the most about Cedric was his work ethic. He was professional and earnest and really approached this wanting to be good, yet one had the feeling he was a real ladies-man off the set. Love that. I wish him a lot of future success.
